Nowadays the printing on paper is no more necessary or compelling.

R/U/G-value unit and relationship to thermal conductivity

The concept of thermal conductivity conventionally refers to thermal conduction that occurs through a material. That is, for a layer of material of known area and thickness, the rate of thermal energy transferred can be calculated based on the temperature differential between sides.

The definition of R/U/G-value based on apparent thermal conductivity can be found in other documents. This describes heat being transferred by all three mechanisms - conduction, radiation, and convection. The R/U/G-value of a piece of insulation is the reciprocal of its apparent thermal conductivity multiplied by the material thickness.

There are weaknesses to using a single laboratory model to simultaneously assess the properties of a material to resist conducted, radiated or convective heating. Convective transfer may depend on the velocity of gas or fluid flow (amongst other variables), or, in the case of natural convection it may exhibit a nonlinear dependence on temperature difference. Radiative transfer depends on thermal emissivity and depends nonlinearly on temperatures.

This is an important consideration in building windows and doors because heat energy arrives in different forms and proportions. The contribution of radiative and conductive heat sources also varies throughout the year and both are important contributors to thermal comfort

The limitations of R/U/G-values in evaluating radiant barriers

Radiant barriers operate by reflecting radiant energy away rather than retarding the flow of heat. In fact, materials such as reflective foil have a high thermal conductivity and would function poorly as a conductive insulator.

This signifies, the smaller the R/U/G-value is, the more slightly is the warm loss, and the better the doors and windows are dammed up, the less energy is wasted. As a state of the technology counts an R/U/G-value of 0.9 W / qmK.

Insulated Glazing Unit or Insulating Glass Unit (commonly referred to as IGU) is a set of two or more lites of glass spaced apart and hermetically sealed to form a single glazed unit with an air space between each lite. Its most important function is to improve the thermal performance of glass when used in architectural applications. In the UK this is often called Double glazing.

The most commonly found IGUs are double glazed, i.e. made with two lites of glass and are therefore also referred to as "double glazing units" or "DGU" (especially in Europe) but IGUs with three lites or more, i.e. "triple glazing" are sometimes used for in very cold climates. Insulated glazing may be framed in a sash or frame or in a curtain wall. IGUs are also commonly used for replacement windows.
